Too Late.
Ever since I built the RAF Emergency Vehicle Set about two years ago, I have thought that the true diorama for them would surely involve a flaming airplane. This past weekend the kids and I made it happen, using an Airfix Beaufighter I’d managed to keep on hand since around 1976. The gravity of the aircraft’s sacrifice — as well as of the hapless pilot who sat trapped in the cockpit as the flames approached from the tail section — was not lost on my five-year-old, who reverently observed when it was all over that, “We lost a great Beaufighter today, but it was OK because it was so old.” Exactly how I felt.
